Join us for a Live presentation of the students at Plesant Knoll Middle School in Fort Mill, SC as they contact the International Space Station. This is a partnership with Amateur Radio onboard the International Space Station (ARISS), NASA, and the York County Amateur Radio Society.
Students at Pleasant Knoll Middle School at 2320 Pleasant Rd in Fort Mill, SC will talk with astronauts on the
International Space Station via Amateur Radio at 12:10pm on Monday, April, 22, 2024. This activity is part of the
ARISS (Amateur Radio on the International Space Station) Program, which promotes learning opportunities as part
of the STEM (Science, Technology, Education and Math) initiative.
The students and teachers have been studying about the ISS, wireless communications, and what is required to
become an astronaut in preparation for this special event.
This contact will take place via amateur radio. The students will use a radio and antennas that will track the space
station as it passes overhead for about 10 minutes. The York County Amateur Radio Society (YCARS) is the
sponsoring club for the contact. Members of YCARS and AMSAT (Amateur Radio Satellite Corporation) will be
assisting with the equipment and technical challenges. The ISS will use the callsign NA1SS and the students will use
the YCARS club callsign K4YTZ. The students will be interviewing astronaut Matthew Dominick, KC0TOR; who was
part of the Space X launched Crew 8.
The event, beginning about 11:00am in the school gymnasium, will include remarks from the administrators,
teachers and ARISS videos about the ISS and STEM education. There will be a demonstration of amateur radio and
information about amateur radio and wireless communications role in STEM education.
What is ARISS?
ARISS is a joint venture by NASA, the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), and the Radio Amateur Satellite
Corporation (AMSAT) to facilitate communication via Amateur Radio between astronauts aboard the International
Space Station and schools and communities around the world. ARISS programs excite and motivate students in a
one-of-a-kind presentation and exchange.
ARISS program goals are:
• Inspiring an interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) subjects and in STEM careers
among young people.
• Providing an educational opportunity for students, teachers, and the general public for learning about
wireless technology and radio science through Amateur Radio.
• Providing an educational opportunity for students, teachers, and the general public for learning about
space exploration, space technologies and satellite communications.
What is YCARS?
The York County Amateur Radio Society, founded in 1948, YCARS is the oldest, continuously operating ham radio
club in the state of South Carolina.
Our mission statement is simple: To promote advancement of the art, science, public service, and fellowship of
amateur radio.
For 75 years, the York County Amateur Radio Society has been promoting Amateur Radio, fellowship, and
providing community service in York County and its surrounding areas.

What is Amateur Radio?
Amateur, or “Ham,” Radio, is a popular service and hobby in which federally licensed participants operate
communications equipment. There are over 700,000 licensed amateurs and nearly 2,300 ARRL-affiliated Amateur
Radio clubs in the United States. Hams talk to each other across town, around the world, and even into space
without the need for normal communications infrastructure, such as cell phone networks or the Internet. Amateur
Radio is regularly used during natural disasters to help local emergency and served agencies (such as the Red
Cross, Salvation Army, and state and local governments) respond when normal communications methods are
disrupted. The Amateur Radio community is a great source of electronics experimentation, public service, and fun.
